AUSTRALIA Page 18 - TASMANIA - March 2007.
Australia, the adopted homeland of both Mal and Lee. The only continent under one government and the country we both love. The picture above is the “skyline” of our city, you can click on the picture to get a larger image. Perth is one of the most isolated regional capital cities in the world. There are so many things to say about our country that I simply do not know where to begin...

Poor in Tassie - The most SEVERE headwind we have ever
experienced.
Very hot day with storm
clouds looming... Raining as I type.
We have decided to NOT go via
the west coast... Logging trucks and poor roads have been a factor in
our decision. The difference in distance is probably only 100k's less
than our original plan.. Negligible really. We took advice from
several sources – ALL cyclists. We will stick with Hwy 1 for
most of our journey north. The abuse continued today despite our
using the “intercity cycleway”... A beautiful path with
“killer” intersections thrown in – They (the
planners) need to visit the “Werribee Trail” in Victoria,
to see how it should be done.. The stupidity of the planners here is
simply astonishing..
We
have been referred to another “Bentist” (=Person that
rides recumbent's) by John and Helen – Cyclists we have not yet
met. Richard has had a stroke and is in the process of recovering. He
built his own recumbent and has been very innovative in his designs
for all manner of cycling paraphernalia some of which can be seen
bellow...
He built this from scratch including the innovative – super
light luggage box.
Yet
More...
Never
ridden a two wheel recumbent – could not ride this :-)
Our
bikes bedded down for the night...

Very
cold day, lots of freezing rain, which saw our thermometer on the
bike register only 7C in the showers... As luck would have it I
snapped my chain... I do not have a spare chain.. so I spent lots of
time in the freezing rain putting bits of chain together to make a
usable one. I eventually succeeded knowing the alternative was a
return to Hobart....
The
abuse on the road is beginning to reach frightening levels... It is
beyond anything comprehensible. I am just thankful it is only on a
verbal level today... We have not been “driven at” or sat
behind at 6kph for 10 minutes like yesterday... A public bus decided
he would sit behind Lee and stop other traffic passing for at least
10 minutes... ABSOLUTLEY no reason for him to do that... Lee copped
it from the drivers HE held up... Duh!!! Nor have we had stuff thrown
at us today. Staying at a FREE caravan park in Kempton – Free
power too, $10,00 if you need a shower.
Here
we met up with Marg, a lady whose pic appears some days ago.. She
cooked us dinner of Bacon, Sausage, couscous and peas... Thanks Marg.
The
seating is covered and plentiful...
